How come you just want to know my budget?
If this is the first handheld you buy, a common problem is to be overwhelmed by the range of features available, and end up buying the most expensive machine without really needing it. I always ask my clients what their budget is to ensure that they think clearly about how much value they intend to get out of the machines. If you would just like to try one out, see how it fits into your routine, then by all means get the cheapest model. If you'd like to really commit to these machines, then consider investing more money.

Note that I've carefully picked the machines in this list to ensure that all of them are good enough to improve your personal and professional organisation.

What should my budget be?
As I said above, the budget should according to how much value you want to get out of the machine. If you're a beginner, you might want the cheapest machine. If you're experienced, steer towards the most powerful model.

Having said that, my advice is that everyone should get the most powerful machine, and put it to use in every aspect of personal and professional life. These handhelds pay for themselves increased efficiency, productivity... and entertainment.

What's so good about the PocketPC range?
Power. Sheer power. As an example, witness the new Compaq iPaq's satellite navigation abilities. That's right, you can stick the iPaq to your car windscreen, and, with a few extras, let it direct you around the streets of UK. Its GPS system knows where you are, and its speakers tell you where to go (or you can read the map on its gorgeous screen). Here's a full list of the advantages:

  1. Hardware is powerful - the screen is bigger, the storage capacity is greater, the and performance faster.
  2. Networking is easier - the machine supports all the major networking standards, including Bluetooth and wireless LAN. It doesn't matter if you don't know what these mean, but they are music to the ears of your hospital IT manager. It makes the job of adding your machine to the network an easy one.
  3. Software is more powerful - that's why some of the next-generation hospital software is being designed exclusively for the PocketPC.
  4. Microsoft Office compatibility is smoother and easier.

How do the Palm and PocketPC stack up?
For 95% of my clients, the most appropriate machine is the Palm-compatible. If you are a poweruser you might want to spend the extra money to get hold of a PocketPC. And if your hospital wants you to use the extra power of the PocketPC to link with the existing networking, then the hospital will pay for you to have the machine.
