Dear Deidre What is the difference between Palm and Pocket PC? Surely a PDA is a PDA regardless? Yours – Confused |

Dear Confused,
Ahh, the big debate! Palm is the genuine original; hence many people refer to PDAs as ‘Palms’. The early models resembled the first mobile phones – bulky and with less power than a small lightbulb. They soon got smaller and smarter, and Palm established themselves as efficient and reliable. When Microsoft saw this new and exciting market, they developed their own system, ‘Pocket PC’. Now Palm, Sony, and Handspring make Palm devices and Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, and Toshiba make Pocket PC. Think of it as the difference between Apple and Microsoft. Two systems with their own plusses and minuses.
Of course, these are just generalisations. Newer Palms have top spec screens, and battery life is always increasing on Pocket PCs. Any device can have its memory upgraded with the aid of slot in ‘cards’ or ‘memory sticks’. More to the point, both systems will happily integrate with your PC, and effortlessly transfer Microsoft Office documents etc. |
