PDAs for Biomedical Data

This class is for NIH staff members who want to learn how to use their Palm Powered or Pocket PC handheld computer to handle research data. The teaching will include discussion of software and usage habits that are appropriate for biomedical researchers.

Objectives

Topics will include

  • HanDBase database software
  • Database design principles
  • Finding and customizing existing databases
  • Securing data
  • Sharing data with colleagues

HanDBase will be used for the demonstrations but the skills are applicable to other database software.

Who should attend

NIH staff members with a Palm Powered (e.g. Palm, PalmOne, Sony, Handspring, Treo) or Pocket PC (eg HP, Dell, Compaq, Toshiba) handheld computer. Please bring a machine with you and ensure that its battery is fully charged. To benefit the most from the training install database software onto your machine (eg a trial version of HanDBase is available from www.handbase.com). Attendees are also invited to bring with them data (eg paper forms, Excel files and existing databases) that they would like to have on their on handheld computer.
