Chapter 20
Getting the funding

Excerpt from the book....

If you have read this far, then congratulations are in order. I hope that you feel excited and educated about handhelds. All that remains is the small matter of money.

Handhelds are cheap, but not free. As discussed in Chapter 13, it is possible to convince colleagues to make a personal investment in the technology. This is certainly laudable, and most importantly, tax-deductible. Nevertheless, you should not have to pay for such things yourselves. After all, when you join a hospital, you are not expected to buy your own pager.

A key part of the UK's NHS Plan is to double the IT investment within the healthcare system. The UK Government has realised the importance of such technologies to providing good medical care, and is keen to provide the money. So, over the next few years, UK-based doctors should see the current trickle of funding become a steady stream of investment directly from the NHS. However, even now, there are several ways of getting small sums of money for innovative projects. This chapter aims to inspire you to pursue the money to make your own local schemes happen.
